VIEW . . .

Perspective is everything.

Some people spend their lives looking in the rearview mirror at the past.  They dwell on regrets and shouldn’t-haves and could-have-beens.  They waste away their lives refusing to move on and reliving things that cannot be changed.

Some people spend their lives straining to look forward through viewfinders into the future.  Afraid to make decisions they might regret or longing for things they aren’t sure they will ever get.  They wish away their lives refusing to see the blessings all around them and striving to have the next best thing that comes along. Trying to find the elusive “happiness” they have been seeking.

I’ve learned that both are sad states to be in.

I want to soak in the view of my present.  To dare to find joy in the here and now.  And in doing so, I’ve found His Presence.  He has given me so many gifts. Thousands of them.  New friends and family to lean on and share life with.

I want to soak in the view of the present.  To live fully in the now.  To embrace my new.

When people who know what the past year has held for me ask me how I am, some are surprised when my answer is “I’m great!”  I’m sure they are wondering how that is possible.  I am a newly divorced single mom, after all.  Shouldn’t I still be mourning the loss of my marriage?  Shouldn’t I be depressed and despondent?

I don’t think so.

I’ve done my mourning.  I’ve been depressed and despondent.  It was necessary and needed.  But to continue on in that state, after all God has done for me this past year, is – in my view – the ultimate slap in God’s face.  I have nothing to be depressed about.  There is nothing left to mourn.  I have a chance to start over.  To build a new life with new relationships and new hopes and dreams.  Not many people get that opportunity.  I want to view it as the blessing from God that it is.

His mercies are new every morning.  Great has been – is – will be – His faithfulness.

Perspective is everything.

  1. Beautiful words that can literally be my own. And again God reminds that He is there right in the middle and we are not alone and there are others that share our journey. Thank you.

  2. Amazing insight. I’m a dreamer and seem to always have my sights set on a goal. (Or twelve of them.) Only recently have I realized that God wants me to fully enjoy the blessings that surround me every day WHILE I go for my dreams. The journey, the present…is the gift; and someday those dreams will be my present. Love your perspective on this. 🙂

    • Thanks! I’ve been such a worry wart most of my life. I’m learning to love where I am, and look for the blessings in the here and now. I think that is the key to contentment.

  3. Dear Nancy
You are a great mom and I admire your honesty and brave heart! Yes, dear friend, suffering teaches us how to live in the present moment fully trusting our Pappa to supply the grace for the next moment, and the next, and the next….. This is how He teaches us how to seek His presence and walk in His ways.
    Much love
    Mia
