Creed – What I Believe

No one put it more perfectly than the late, great Rich Mullins.  I am sure that when He got to Heaven all the angels greeted him with his songs.

I believe in the God the Father, Almighty maker of heaven and maker of earth
And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, Our Lord
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
Born of the virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate
He was crucified and dead and buried

I believe that He who suffered was crucified, buried, and dead
He descended into Hell and on the third day He rose again
He ascended into Heaven where He sits at God’s mighty right hand
I believe that He’s returning to judge the quick and the dead of the sons of man

I believe in the Holy Spirit, one holy church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins
I believe in the resurrection
And I believe in a life that never ends

I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am
I did not make it, no it is making me
It is the very truth of God and not the invention of any man

Rich, of course, based this song on the Nicene Creed, which, according to Theopedia, is the Christian statement of faith accepted by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and most Protestant churches.  It states:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. Who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

  1. I am on a similar journey, my thoughts along the way are muddled and I am not very good at designing one of these things. I like to read and respond to others that are on a similar quest.
